URJC Campus Bird Guide: A Living Demonstrator for Biodiversity Awareness representative picture

he URJC Campus Bird Guide is a biodiversity awareness and citizen science initiative developed by Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) to document and promote the rich avian diversity present across its campuses. Based on observations collected between 2020 and 2025, the guide identifies 72 bird species recorded in the campuses of Móstoles, Alcorcón, Fuenlabrada, and Vicálvaro, combining scientific information, campus-specific occurrence data, and photographic evidence gathered largely on site.

Beyond being a field guide, the initiative serves as an educational and environmental engagement tool that encourages students, researchers, staff, and visitors to explore local biodiversity and develop a deeper connection with nature on campus. The project is conceived as a living guide, open to future updates through new observations, species records, and collaborative contributions from the university community. By fostering biodiversity monitoring, environmental literacy, and citizen participation, the initiative supports sustainable campus management and contributes to the conservation of urban wildlife within the university environment.
