The new photovoltaic canopies installed over parking areas across Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) campuses represent a significant step forward in the university’s sustainability and energy transition strategy. By integrating solar panels into parking structures, these installations generate clean electricity for on-site consumption while simultaneously providing shade and protection for vehicles. The project maximizes the use of existing infrastructure, transforming parking areas into productive renewable energy assets without requiring additional land use. Beyond reducing carbon emissions and dependence on conventional energy sources, the photovoltaic canopies contribute to lower operating costs and support URJC’s commitment to environmental responsibility. As part of the university’s broader renewable energy plan, these installations help create more sustainable, efficient, and climate-resilient campuses while serving as a visible example of innovation and sustainability for the entire university community.

URJC currently operates approximately 700 kWp of installed photovoltaic capacity, primarily located on building rooftops. During 2025, these systems generated more than 820,000 kWh of renewable electricity, resulting in annual savings of nearly €160,000 and covering over 6% of the university’s total electricity consumption. Through the continuous expansion of its solar infrastructure, including rooftop systems and photovoltaic canopies, URJC is steadily progressing towards a cleaner, more resilient, and energy-efficient campus model.
