Sustainability of Green Fuels: CarbonNeutralLNG Summer School at Crete representative picture

The European decarbonisation pathway depends not only on the electrification of energy demand, but equally on the parallel development of carbon-neutral fuels for the sectors where direct electrification is technically or economically constrained. From 27 to 29 August 2025, NTUA contributed to the CarbonNeutralLNG Summer School on Green Fuels, hosted at the Royal & Imperial Belvedere Resort in Hersonissos, Crete. Organised within the framework of the CarbonNeutralLNG research initiative, the Summer School brought together students and researchers from across Europe for a three-day intensive on the role of green fuels and renewable energy technologies in delivering the European Union's decarbonisation objectives. Through expert-led lectures and interactive workshops, participants engaged with three closely interconnected technical themes: the synthesis of green methane from hydrogen and biogenic COâ‚‚, the conversion of biomass into bio-LNG (liquefied bio-methane); and the evaluation of the resulting fuels and processes through full Life Cycle Assessment and Life Cycle Costing analyses. The Summer School complements NTUA's broader work on power-sector decarbonisation, including the 2026 Spring School on Power Plant Decarbonisation with Green Hydrogen, by extending the same evidence-based, life-cycle approach to the carbon-neutral fuels that will be essential for industry, heavy transport and aviation. Participation in initiatives of this scope strengthens the training of the next generation of researchers in the integrated energy systems that the European energy transition now requires.
