Sustainability across Continents — Columbia–NTUA Workshop on Infrastructure and Energy

International cross-institutional dialogue is essential to advancing the engineering response to climate change, particularly in domains where infrastructure decisions taken today will shape resilience and emissions for decades to come. On 24–25 June 2025, the NTUA Zografou Campus hosted a two-day Joint Workshop with Columbia University on the theme "Infrastructure and Energy Sustainability in a Changing Climate", bringing together leading experts from both institutions for a structured exchange on the challenges at the intersection of climate science, energy systems and the built environment. The workshop provided a platform for academic peers from two distinct geographical and policy contexts — the United States and the European Union — to compare research approaches, regulatory frameworks and engineering solutions for energy infrastructure that must remain operational, affordable and low-carbon under increasingly volatile climate conditions. Discussions engaged with the resilience of critical energy infrastructure to climate stress, the integration of renewable energy at scale, the role of digital monitoring and predictive modelling, and the policy and financial instruments required to deliver the necessary investments. By convening such transatlantic dialogues on its own campus, NTUA reinforces its position as a node in the international network of research universities working on the engineering of the climate transition, and provides its faculty, doctoral candidates and senior students with direct exposure to peers at the frontier of the discipline
