Green roof and Photovoltaics on the monument bulding of the Faculty of Architecture and Design STUBA

As part of a necessary roof refurbishment, the Faculty of Architecture and Design at the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava has transformed the roof of its main faculty building — a national cultural monument — into a sustainability demonstrator combining photovoltaics, greenery, and public accessibility.

A comprehensive photovoltaic system with a total installed capacity of 96 kW has been implemented on the renovated roof. The system is designed primarily for the faculty’s own electricity consumption and is supported by two inverters with outputs of 60 kW and 36 kW. Each photovoltaic panel is equipped with an optimiser and a disconnector, which increases operational safety and reduces the risk of electric shock during emergency situations.

The project also includes two smart charging stations for electric vehicles, further strengthening the faculty’s transition towards low-emission mobility and more sustainable campus operations.

Beyond its economic benefits, such as reducing energy costs, the installation represents a concrete step towards greater energy self-sufficiency and sustainability. The accessible roof also contributes to sustainability awareness among students, staff, and visitors, while the green roof helps reduce overheating and improve the microclimate of the building.

At the same time, the project serves as a living laboratory and educational tool for students of architecture and design, demonstrating how renewable energy systems, green infrastructure, and smart technologies can be integrated into architectural heritage and contemporary campus development.
